Can Vision Exist Without Somatosensation?

چکیده
The interconnection between vision and somatosensation is already well-established and is further supplemented by the evolutionary link between eyes and photoreceptors, and the functional connection between photosensation and thermoreception. However, our analysis hypothesizes a possibility that vision is not just linked to somatosensation, but may not exist without somatosensation. Surprisingly, our photoreceptor itself needs somatosensory proteins for its functioning, and our entire visual pathway depends on somatosensory cues for its functioning.

On the Somatosensation of Vision
The interconnection between vision and somatosensation is already well-established and is further supplemented by the evolutionary link between eyes and photoreceptors, and the functional connection between photosensation and thermoreception. However, our analysis shows that the relation between vision and somatosensation is much deeper and suggests that somatosensation may possibly be the basi...
متن کاملDeveloping body representations in early life: combining somatosensation and vision to perceive the interface between the body and the world.
This article lays out the computational challenges involved in constructing multisensory representations of the body and the interface between the body and the external world. It then provides a review of the most pertinent empirical literature regarding the ontogeny of such representational abilities in early life, focussing especially on ability to make spatiotemporal links between bodily eve...
متن کاملLinks between vision and somatosensation Vision can improve the felt position of the unseen hand
During reaching movements, sensory signals must be transformed into appropriate motor commands. Anatomical, electrophysiological, and neuropsychological evidence suggest that there is no single, supramodal map of space that is used to guide reaching. Instead, movements appear to be planned and controlled within multiple coordinate systems, each one attached to a different body part. Recent neur...
متن کاملAsymmetric Sensory Reweighting in Human Upright Stance
To investigate sensory reweighting as a fundamental property of sensor fusion during standing, we probed postural control with simultaneous rotations of the visual scene and surface of support. Nineteen subjects were presented with pseudo-random pitch rotations of visual scene and platform at the ankle to test for amplitude dependencies in the following conditions: low amplitude vision: high am...
